You are gods – Is there New Age teaching in the Bible?

PS 82:6 “I said, ‘You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High.’ “

Even in this verse, God makes a distinction between those of whom he says “you are gods,” and “the Most High.”  He says of the “gods”, you are sons (not co-rulers, not equal with God).

PS 89:6 “For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord? Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?”

We are made in God’s image, and were appointed by him to rule over the works of his hands (Psalm 8), and this is where it seems the resemblance is that gives the title of “gods.”  But we are only faint images of the only God, there is no comparison, if we measure ourselves with God:

EX 15:11 “Who among the gods is like you, O Lord? Who is like you–majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?”

EZE 28:2 “Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre: This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘In the pride of your heart you say, “I am a god; I sit on the throne of a god in the heart of the seas.” But you are a man and not a god, though you think you are as wise as a god. Will you then say, “I am a god,” in the presence of those who kill you? You will be but a man, not a god, in the hands of those who slay you.'”

So the Lord shows us, through our powerlessness to deal with death, that we are not gods like God is:

PS 82:7 “You will die like mere men; you will fall like every other ruler.”

So we, those who he has called “gods,” need the Most High God:

PS 68:20 “Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign Lord comes escape from death.”

PS 82:8 “Rise up, O God, judge the earth…”
