“The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.”
How quickly the account has passed
From words of love and Sarah’s laugh,
From converse as a man with friends,
To trembling for a weight of sin.
What silent tremor in the air
As if the earth itself could fear,
What heat perceived in every glance
Was kindling on God’s countenance?
Oh, may our hearts not miss the knell
Before the flame of God, to tell
What image of that fire was near
To Abraham, and why he feared.
